Storytelling
The movie that I decided to choose
was The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which
is a Comedy-drama. This is one of my favorite movies because it’s so deep. The movie is about a young boy named Charlie who
is a shy teenager without friends that has just started high school. He misses
his best friend, who had committed suicide, and he writes letters to an
imaginary friend telling his feelings. Further into the movie, we find out that
Charlie had a mental illness problem in his past. Soon Charlie befriends the
veterans Patrick, who is gay, and his stepsister Sam, who he falls in love with
(IMDb). Charlie is played by Logan Lerman, Patrick is played by Ezra Miller,
and Sam is played by Emma Watson (IMDb). The movie was directed by Stephen
Chbosky and was released on September 21, 2012 (IMDb).
The opening scene of this movie starts
with Charley writing to his friend, which is his journal, about how his first
day of school is probably going to go. He has no friends besides his parents,
sister, and his journal. I think the opening scene of this movie is very deep because
usually, you don’t see high school boys writing about their personal life in a
journal. The movie has many qualities of a strong opening and a good first
line. The first quality that the opening scene of this movie had, was a good established
setting (Weiland 339). The setting in the beginning scene of the movie it shot
in his room, where he is writing to his friend. This hooked me because most
teenage boys aren’t inside writing, they’re usually out with friends or playing
sports. Also, the opening scene starts with the protagonist of movie, which is
Charley (Weiland 339). I defiantly felt connected to Charley as he was talking
about his life and his struggles. While growing up high school was defiantly not
my cup of tea, and I just felt like Charley and I had a lot in common. The Perks of Being a Wallflower had many
elements of a retrieving first line. The opening line makes you become really
interested in Charley because he’s spilling out all his feelings, and we as
watchers want to know why he’s feeling the way he does (Weiland 340). Tone
played a big part in the introduction, it went along perfect with it and didn’t
misguide us for the rest of the movie (Weiland 341).
The movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower had some good qualities of an
opening scene. It opened with the protagonist of the movie, an established
setting, and a good tone. For anyone who hasn’t seen this movie, they will be
hooked after the opening scene. This movie is very good, and has a deep story
behind it, so go watch it!
